The last Uber ride I took was unexpected. The driver was a 72-year-old man. He assured me that he could still see the road, drive the speed limit, and tell the difference between the gas and brake. He also had a candy jar full of the kind of hard candies that I always used to get from candy dishes around my mother’s house as a kid.

As I sucked on a butterscotch, he laughed and said that he had bought those mostly for the girls. He found it funny that these days, girls would both get in the car with a stranger as well as take candy from one. I laughed and discussion opened up pretty naturally. He was retired and bored, his wife had died a few years earlier so he was also lonely. He loved driving because it put him around younger people again and a lot of the girls he picked up would flirt with the sweet old man, especially after he’d tell them about his wife. Sometimes they would even give him  hug or a peck on the cheek once the ride was over. He was milking the situation and playing up the role.
